Govt B.T College (GBTC), Goalpara was established in 1974. The college was started for the development of well trained teachers to fulfill the need of qualified teachers in the region. The college was set up with an objective of developing trained teacher to meet the requirement of imparting quality education at the secondary and senior secondary level in the region. The college received approval from the ERC (Eastern Regional Committee) and from the NCTE (National Council for Teacher Education), in 2001. Well-qualified and experienced lecturers help the students in accomplishing their aim of becoming secondary and higher secondary teachers.

The college is affiliated to Gauhati University, established in 1948 under the Guwahati University Act 1947. This is the first university of North East India. This university catered to the needs of all the students from Bengal, Bihar, Orissa and Assam. The University has been accredited with a 4 star rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It is funded by the University Grants Commission and the Government of Assam for research and other academic activities
