The then Hon'ble Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh alongwith Union Agriculture Minister,Shri. Sharad Pawar, paid a visit to Vidarbha (Maharashtra) on 1st July 2006.A package for the benefit of the farmers was announced on 2nd July 2006 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister. As per the instructions contained therein a programme called “Technology Mission on Citrus for Vidarbha†was proposed and on its approval the mission was launched on 4th January, 2007 under National Horticulture Mission for expendingcitrus cultivation and quality production.
This programme was allotted by the Ministry of Agriculture, GOI, New Delhi to the NRC for Citrus, Nagpur for implementation keeping in view the problems faced by the citrus growers of Vidarbha. Vidarbha, which is a major citrus growing region in the country and well known for its ‘Nagpur Santra’ i.e. the Nagpur mandarin. The major citrus growing districts are Amravati, Nagpur, Wardha, Yavatmal, Buldana, Washim and Akola. Today TMC for Vidarbha has completed 8 years of operation in eleven districts of Vidarbha and Director CCRI, Nagpur (erstwhile NRCC) is the Mission Leader.
As Vidarbha is proud of its ‘Santra’, Marathwada is known for sweet orange ‘Mosambi’ cultivation. It is grown on 76 thousand hactares of which maximum area lies in Jalna district followed by Aurangabad, Nanded, Parbhani, Hingoli and Beed districts. In this case also the average productivity is far below (6.0 to 10 tonnes/ha) the national average of 10.7 tonnes/ha. Considering above facts there was a popular demand for extension of Technology Mission on Citrus for Marathwada. Accordingly programme was extended to Marathwada sanctioned in January, 2009. The mission in Marathwada is operational at Marathwada Agricultural University and has successfully completed 6 years of operation in eight districts of Marathwada. The Technology Mission on Citrus for Marathwada is operational under overall control of Mission Leader and Director,CCRI, Nagpur.
