Mata Gujri Ji (1624-1705)was the wife of Ninth Sikh Guru,Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and the mother of the Tenth Guru,Guru Gobind Singh Ji.She was the wife of a supreme martyr mother of a brave saint soldier and the grandmother of four amazing children who attained martyrdom at the age of 6,9,14 and 18 years respectively .She supported Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji when he was in deep meditation fro years together .After the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji,as a single parent, she raised and mouilded the founder of Khalsa fraternity ,the Great Guru Gobind Singh Ji .
The embodiment of supreme sacrifice, this noble supreme soul, was born in the year 1627, at Kartarpur (Punjab). Inspired by her great father, Bhai Lal Chand Ji, she took to serving the poor and the downtrodden. She represented a glowing example of noble qualities of patience, self-sacrifice and devotion. Mata Gujri Ji was married to Shri Tegh Bahadurji, the 9th Guru, who meditated for 21 years, 3 months and 17 days.
Guru Tegh Bahadurji attained Guru Gaddi after the untimely demise of shri Guru Harkishanji. The social, political and religious conditions in the country during that period were chaotic. The rulers were indulging in violence, torture and exploitation and there was no religious tolerance or freedom. To save the humanity, Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji had to sacrifice himself at Chandini Chowk in Delhi. Mata Gujri ji accepted the sacrifice of her husband as the “Will of the Almighty†and with zeal decided to fight intolerance and exploitation.She brought up her grandsons (the four sahibjadas) and constantly reminded them that the grandfather and the great grandfather sacrificed their lives to strengthen the ideals of Guru Nanak Ji.
