Established in the year 1957, Govt Brennen College of Teacher Education, Thalassery became one of the leading institutions providing state-of-the-art knowledge in the field of Education. Prior to the establishment of the college, Captain Edward Brennen started a free school in the year 1862 for boys irrespective of caste, creed and colour for providing a sound English education. Later in the year 1957 the school was converted to Govt Training College. In 1994 the college was upgraded and renamed as Govt College of Teacher Education (CTE). In September 2008 the college is renamed as Govt Brennen College of Teacher Education (GBCTE). In November 2008 the college has been elevated to the status of a Research Centre in Education, the first of its kind at government sector in Kannur University. The college is presently running B.Ed Courses in Four languages (Arabic, English, Hindi, and Malayalam) and four subjects (Natural Science, Mathematics, Physical Science, and Social Science) with a total strength of 120 students and M.Ed course with an intake of 25 students. Presently this institution is recognized as a course work centre of Kannur university offering Coursework leading to Ph.D every year.
