National Law University Delhi PhD Admission 2024-25

National Law University is a well known Law University located in New Delhi, India. It was established in the year of 2008. The University has been ranked 2 by NIRF, consistently 3rd time in a row. NLU Delhi offers various certificate, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate courses in different fields of Law.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission

  • A Master's degree in Law or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree in Law by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting, or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/ differently-abled candidates and other categories of candidates, as per the decisions of the UGC from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991.

How to Apply

The application process is conducted online. To apply for admission, the candidates must visit the NLU official website and register for Entrance Test.

  • Go to the login page, click on the register to Apply Now link.
  • Read relevant details about the course and application from the home page links. 
  • Fill the details into the User Registration Form.
  • Confirm Registration details by clicking on the Confirm button.
  • Login using the credentials.
  • Proceed to fill the application form.
  • Click Submit to save the details.
  • Make a payment to successfully submit the form.

PhD Fee Structure

  • Entrance Exam Fee- Rs.1050/- (SC/ST and Persons with disability)
  • Entrance Exam Fee- Rs. 3050/- (Unreserved/ Foreign Nationals)
  • Registration Fee (One Time)- Rs. 50,000/-
  • Continuation Fee (from 2nd Year onward p.a.)- Rs. 30,000/-
  • Examination Fee (One Time)- Rs. 20,000/-
  • Refundable Security Deposit (One Time)- Rs. 15,000/-
  • Library Deposit- Rs. 3,000/-
  • Hostel Deposit- Rs. 5,000/-
  • Mess Deposit- Rs. 3,000/-

Admission Procedure

  • The admission shall be through a two-stage selection process, which includes (1) written entrance test and (2) the evaluation of research proposals followed by interview/ viva-voce. In the final selection of candidates, a weightage of 70% shall be given to the entrance test and 30% shall be given to the results of evaluation of research proposals and interview/viva-voce.

Entrance Test Format

  • The AILET has 100 Multiple Choice Questions for 100 marks that must be attempted within 1 hour 30 minutes. 50% of the questions for the entrance test shall be relating to Research Methodology and the remaining 50% shall be from different areas of law i.e. all major subject of law like Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Law of Contract, Jurisprudence, Law of Tort, Corporate Law and International Law etc. All the candidates are required to appear in the Entrance Test. Only Foreign Nationals are exempted from the Entrance Test. The Foreign Nationals are also required to apply online on the same portal.

NEGATIVE MARKING: There will be Negative Marking in AILET. The criteria for negative marking will be based on the formula 0.25*4=1 that means per wrong answer 0.25 Marks will be deducted. Therefore, four wrong answers will lead to deduction of 1 Mark.
