Inspired by the work of the visionaries like Mahatma Phule, Lokmanya Tilak and Mahatma Gandhi, S. M. alias Buvasaheb Borkar, Trimbak Aabaji alias Nanasaheb Deochakke, Balwant Babaji Deshpande, Haribhau Keshav Patwardhan, Chintaman Mohaniraj Saptarshi, Yashwant Digambar Vaidya, R. B. G. K. Chitale, R. B. N. B. Deshmukh, Shantilalji Patni, K. S. Phirodia and the other like-minded founded ‘Anath Vidyarthi Grih’ in 1913 for the poor children to enable them to have education. This was followed by Carpentary Workshop. Encouraged by the success of these ventures, Hind Seva Mandal came in to being in 1922.

The Great Freedom-Fighter Dada Chaudhari and Rashtriya Pathshala encouraged many other personalities to associate themselves with their selfless services. R. B. Pandit Nehru, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Dr. Zakir Husain, Kakasaheb Gadgil visited our institutions on different occasions and appreciated the work rendered with missionary zeal. Kusumagraj, a great poet, lauded our work and the celebrities in the fields of science, film, drama were very happy with the Mandal’s accomplishments.

‘Amruit Mahotsav’ – a Mile Stone in the unending pilgrimage

The incessant work put in by enthusiastic men bore fruit and now the Mandal is like an imperishable evergreen tree whose roots have been strengthened by a band of devoted workers and whose branches bask in glory providing shade to thousands of students quenching their insatiable thirst for knowledge. In this pilgrimage, the Carpentry workshop and the soap-factory complement the need-based job-oriented education. Over thirty Institutions imparting instructions from KG to PG have had a major share in the cause of meaningful education. The well-wishers and patrons irrespective of caste, creed and religion have been the pillars of the edifice.
The Mandal is now confident of surmounting any obstacle. The dedicated school and college teachers, non-teaching members have left nothing undone. Here, the highlights of this work may be mentioned.
* The first secondary school set up in an inaccessible tribal area is an eloquent testimony to this work.
* Provision of night schools at Ahmednagar and Shrirampur for those who wish to earn and learn.
* The Mandal has always aimed at providing education responding to the needs of changing times. The computer training launched m every school is a pointer to this.
* Ensuring the continuity of the brilliant students in the merit list.
* Developing small scale industries like Soap-factory, Carpentry Workshop to facilitate work-culture.
* Grooming promising students to enable them to compete at the national and international levels.
* Making successful attempts in constructing spacious buildings and developing play grounds.

Thus during this pilgrimage of 75 years we have achieved laudable success. In different fields – literature, industry, sports, social and cultural research, science and technology, health-service, administration, management -the students of this institution have displayed praiseworthy success. They have been our proud treasure.

The determination of dedicated office bearers would enable the Mandal to undertake modem projects in the schools and the colleges so that they would give a fillip for responding to the fast changing needs in the Fiélds ot science and other fields. Future goal to achieve

Job oriented courses at graduate and post-graduate levels are to be started, such as –

Pemraj Sarda College is one of the famous colleges in the Ahmednagar district and is established by Hind Seva Mandal in 1962.The foundation stone was laid by our late Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Hind Seva Mandal was established in 1922 with the aim of propagation of education in the Ahmednnagar district. The workers of the institution were the common people of middle class society without any political or economical support, but they had the ambition, will power and sustained efforts to build up the society and consequently the nation for over all upliftment. They were influenced by the images of the great revolutionaries and freedom fighters like Lokmanya Tilak, Mahtma Gandhi and Vir.Savarkar. The activists like Senapati Bapat, Raosaheb Patwardhan, Nanasaheb Nisal etc. gave leadership to this prosperous institution. It is now running 32 different schools, colleges and workshops in the Ahmednagar district.

Late Shri Zumberlal Sarda donated Rs.1 lakh in the name of his brother Pemraj. And then the college was stared in a small building of “Anath Vidyarthi Gruh”, (an orphanage). The Chief Minister Shri Y.B.Chavan inaugurated this college. Initially, Arts and Science College was started. Soon after commerce faculty was also started along with the post graduation courses in various subjects. In due course, step-by-step, the necessary constructions were made with the help of the generous people and the valuable grants from U.G.C. Even the staff of the Hind Seva Mandal had contributed much for building and for development of this college. In 1987 the library building was constructed, for which Madhavlalji Dhoot, a generous industrialist in Ahmednagar, contributed Rs. 1 lakh.

Now the college has big play ground, a boys Hostel, about 5000 Sq. Mts. built up area for classrooms, office and for other purposes. The college administers the coaching in three faculties along with several subjects for about 2500 students. The Junior College was started in 1976. Since then, our students are regularly in the merit list. The college and its departmental activities, especially Gymkhana department constantly keeps name of the college flashing in the newspapers.

Currently, there are 37 junior college teachers, 36 senior college Teachers and 32 non-teaching staff in the college. All of the teachers are well versed in their subjects and most of them are engaged in some or other social activities. Various teachers won best teacher state award and other prizes in various fields. This college is proud of all these achievements.

Curricular Aspects

The college has been offering Bachelors’ degrees in arts, science and commerce and three PG courses in Marathi, Political Science and Commerce.

In the Science faculty, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, Zoology and Electronics are the subjects offered, out of which Physics, Chemistry and Electronics are Special subjects at the B.Sc level. In the Arts faculty, Marathi, Hindi, English, History, Political Science, Economics and Geography are the subjects offered. There are Masters’ programmes in Marathi, Political Science and Commerce. A certificate course in Spoken Sanskrit is also offered by the college.

The subjects are taught according to the regulations of the University of Pune and the courses are restructured accordingly. The students have choice in respect of offered Elective Options only. Teachers of the college have participated in various curricula design of the University. There is a periodic academic audit by the university.

Teaching, Learning and Evaluation

The students are admitted to the various courses on merit. The advanced learners are encouraged / motivated to plan ahead by conducting personal guidance for better students. Special library facilities like text book borrowing, visiting lectures, group discussions and seminars are some of the measures utilized to enhance the learning profile of poor and talented students.

The college encourages teachers to make their teaching plan through departmental meetings, preparation of timetables and distribution of teaching work. The teaching schedule is also unitized according to the semester system in some courses. The college supplements the lecture method of teaching by study tours, practicals, projects, seminars and workshops, guest lectures, industry visits and field observations. The college has the facility to provide audio-visual aids.

The total number of teaching days is 186 while the office works for 240 days in an year. The ratio of full time teachers to part-time teachers is 33: 2, while the ratio of teaching staff to non-teaching staff is 35: 32
The evaluation methods are communicated to the students well in advance by the college. The students are evaluated through tutorials, term-end examinations, oral tests and the annual/semester University examinations. The teachers are recruited as per the University Act. A fairly large number of ad hoc teachers have been appointed to carry out the work load as prescribed by the University and Government.

A fairly large number of teaching staff have attended seminars / workshops / conferences as participants/resource persons. The college follows the self–appraisal method to evaluate the performance of teachers. The college conducts faculty development programmes and 19 teachers have been benefited from this program. It is heartening to note that 5 teachers have received teaching awards, from various organizations.

Research, Consultancy and Extension

The college promotes research by providing teachers study leave. The College has designated a person for counseling and extension activities. The various extension activities of the college are: Community Development, Social Work, Health and Hygiene awareness, Medical Camp, Blood donation camp, AIDS awareness and Environmental awareness. The NSS wing of the college is actively engaged in outreach programmes. There is also an NCC outfit in the college.

The extension activities are widely publicized and teachers encourage students to participate by distributing the work.

The most outstanding extension activity of the college is the “SNEHALAYA” project which is directed by the teachers of the political science department with the full participation of other teachers and students.
