Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering (KMSME) is started with a precise revelation of creating eminent seafarers who can cop up with the demands of the ever-growing shipping industry. It is the only Marine Engineering Training Institute in the country, which is under the direct control of a State Government University. This department functions under the aegis of the Directorate General of Shipping, Govt. of India, Mumbai. Located in the heart of Cochin University campus, KMSME started its first batch of 4 year B.Tech marine engineering programme in 2003.The presence of various departments in the Cochin University, which even have their own strong research wings, enable the students to acquire profound knowledge in every topic as they wish. Presently KMSME has an intake capacity of 80 students per year,selected on all India basis by conducting Common Admission Test(CAT). The B.Tech degree programme in Marine Engineering spanning 8 semesters has an exhaustive curriculum designed to provide the students with a modern and sound education in basic science and engineering subjects, along with an in-depth knowledge of the various facets of marine engineering. An intensive practical training of 6 months duration is given to all cadets inside the DG approved Ship-in Campus Lab and in the Machinery O’hauling Workshop. Further, cadets are given practical training in the Full Machine Engine Room Simulator Lab and Control System Lab. Students also get chances to go onboard ships to acquire machinery maintenance experience. In addition to the B.Tech Degree Course, KMSME also conducts DG approved courses (both at Operational and Management level) on Engine Room Simulator. M.Tech Degree in Marine Engineering for the first time in the country by a Government University is scheduled to commence from 2014 academic year.
