Basaveshwar Arts College, Bagalkot, was founded in 1944. The College is managed by Basaveshwar Vidya Vardhak Sangha, (BVVS) Bagalkot, which was founded still earlier in 1906. This parent organization (BVVS) was founded with a noble mission of spreading network of educational institutions to preserve and spread cultural and social values propounded by Shri Basaveshwara -- a renowned social reformer after whom the institution is named. The institution has succeeded to a great extent in achieving its goal by establishing and running educational institutes in the northern part of the Karnataka in the disciplines of Arts, Science, Commerce, Medicine, Engineering, Management, Education and Vocational studies. It is remarkable to note that the institute was founded in the pre-independence period when education in general and higher education in particular were the need of the hour.
