Municipal College, Rourkela, the brain-child of a group of prominent citizens of the locality took its birth in 1978 under the aegis of Rourkela Educational Development Society (REDS). The college owes its origin to the patronage of the then ADM, Rourkela, Mr. A. J. Alex, I.A.S and the then Executive Officer, NAC(CT) Mr. Pitambar Mohanty, O.A.S(I) among others. Thanks to the keen interest taken by Mr. Aurobindo Behera, I.A.S, the then ADM, Rourkela- the college was shifted from the Municipal Hall to the present spacious building in 1984.

Intermediate classes began in 1978 while B. Com was introduced in 1980, BSc in 1981 and BA in 1985. From a modest beginning of 430 students on roll today we boast of sanctioned strength of 2784. We provide teaching facilities in both +2 and +3 levels being affiliated to Council of Higher Secondary Education, Orissa and Sambalpur University, Sambalpur respectively.

Municipal College is a premier educational institution of the state that plays a capital role for the cause of Higher Education. The intellectual and academic climate provides a serene and salubrious milieu to the students to pursue their studies. It is practically due to the splendid exhibition of the scholastic calibre of the students that the college occupies a permanent and prominent niche in the educational map of the state of Orissa. In various extra-curricular activities also we have amply demonstrated that we are miles ahead of others. The members of the staff – both teaching and non-teaching – have been regularly putting in ceaseless efforts for the cause of education, knowledge and wisdom. The principals, under their able stewardship, have steered the institution all along in the right direction.
