A group of Local patriots established Rajendra College on 1st August 1938 in Sah Banwari Lal Building situated on the western outskirt of Chapra with a mission of all round development of the nation and to make the young generation capable and efficient. Teaching started on 15th August 1938. Call it just coincidence or good fortune that 15th August was declared as Independence Day just after nine years.

When the British Government was out to crush the freedom movement in the country, opening a college after the name of a leading Gandhian Rajendra Babu clearly indicates that the basic principle of the foundation of Rajendra College was love for the nation. History is testimony of the fact that Rajendra College had become the main centre of freedom struggle where nation-lovers from the different parts imparted or obtained education as one of the premiere colleges of the state. Rajendra College has the glory of becoming first affiliated college of Patna University after the foundation of Bihar province.

This is the first college in Bihar where teaching of degree level commence was started. Patna University granted affiliation to this college up to I.A. in 1938, B.A in 1939, I.Com in 1940, B.Com in 1942, I.Sc in 1944 and B.Sc in 1949. This College earned the distinction of becoming first college in the state teaching in all the three faculties of Arts, Science and Commerce.

Today, in the history of 72 years, this college has crossed several milestones on the path of progress. Now, this college has the facility of teaching in Arts, Science and Commerce faculties, classes of Intermediate, Degree Honours and Post Graduate standard in the following Subjects: Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Philosophy, History, Geography, Psychology, Political Science, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany and Commerce.

P.G. teaching in four subjects started in this college in 1972. Later on, P.G. teaching in all the 16 subjects started here. It is a matter of pride that the Post Graduate Departments of the college served as Post Graduate Departments of Jai Prakash University till the separate establishment of Post Graduate Departments of Jai Prakash University in 2008. It is also most fortunate that this college is associated with the name of Dr. Rajendra Prasad the first President of India and this University, with Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan – Two distinguished personalities of India, popular all over the world.

This college has a leading place in matter of Teaching, Organization, Discipline and Examination result among all the colleges under the University. Its students have earned prestige for this college by securing top positions in different departments and organizations of the country.

Keeping in view the glorious past, teachers and staff have been constantly striving to place Rajendra College among the ranks of Premier college of the country. Recently, UGC Sponsored Functional Hindi and English courses have been started in this college. Several other vocational courses running here are BCA, BBA, BJMC, B.Sc. (Biotech).
