Bharathi Women’s College has entered into the 50th year of glorious educational service to the population of the George Town located along the shores of Bay of Bengal, marking the beginning of northern region of the city qualified as neglected backward region. Founded in 1964 as Government Arts College for women, its quality and character was shaped by a host of dedicated Principals, Teachers as well as generation of brilliant students. This college was recognized by the UGC under 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act of 1956. The college was known for its academic standing and leadership building for women in this area from the time of inception.

During the centenary celebration of the famous Tamil poet Subramanian Bharathi in 1981-82 this college was renamed as Bharathi Women’s College. Today the college has more than 4000 students and over 150 faculty members serving in 13 different departments. The college is located in the fairly large campus of 8 Acres, nested in the crowded Gorgeous George Town the actual Chennai. This institution caters to the needs of economically and socially weaker sections of the society, especially the first generation of women learners providing curricula as well as sports and other activities. The college conferred Autonomy in 1998 and was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1999 and subsequently it applied for re-accreditation in October 2004.
