( Director & Principal)The fast expanding city was converted into a world class destination with the tireless efforts of millions of people who migrated to the city after independence, and it only seemed fitting, that the city took care of health need of its population. Considering the dental demands of the people of Delhi, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) began, as a small department of dentistry under Maulana Azad Medical College and associated Lok Nayak Hospital in the 1960s. At the time, this dental department was served by a group of senior dental surgeons who worked on honorary basis. Some of those great names include Dr. PP Sawhney and Dr. PL Khurana, both honorary dental surgeons during the third quarter of the last century. This formed the foundation of organized dental care ultimately leading to start of formal dental education in the city.

The next major milestone was in the year 1983, when Dr. PP Thukral was formally appointed as the first Associate Professor and Head of Dental Wing. In the same year, the first batch of BDS students was admitted to MAMC. The year 1984 saw Dr. AN Srivastava being appointed as the Head of Dental Wing, followed by Dr. NC Sangal in 1991. As the Dental Wing was gaining more and more popularity in and around Delhi, especially as the closest dental institutions were present at faraway places like Amritsar and Lucknow, the OPD attendance, especially speciality dental care, started increasing rapidly.
