Hajee Karutha Rowther Howdia College, Uthamapalayam was established in 1956. The college is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. The college occupies a unique place among the institutions of higher education in Tamil Nadu. Hajee Karutha Rowther Howdia College claims the reputation of the first rural college ever established in the erstwhile Madurai district.

Rowther Howdia College is a pioneer in providing higher educational facilities with a missionary zeal to students hailing from Muslim minority community, to the rural agricultural families and other deprived under privileged sections of the society. The college is one of the approved study centers of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Many certificate courses of IGNOU are offered for the students and public.
