It was the high noon of the British Empire, when the college came into existence in 1878. The college witnessed the dawn and growth of the Congress Movement, the diverse phase of the Freedom Movement and the two World Wars. One of the delegates to the 1885 inaugural session of the Indian National Congress in Mumbai was a member of the faculty of the college, Prof. K. Sundararaman. The Gandhian struggle ended in the coming of Independence. Things never remained the same in the free India. The social and political dynamics of the nation had made its impact on every walk of life including college education. Policies as regards admission of students, appointment of the staff and the principles governing the grants-in-aid have undergone changes. The college has been able to adapt itself to the changes with energy and responsibility

It will be a self-delusion to assert that the college has solved all its problems with ease and that everything is hunky-dory with the institution. No college can afford to remain self-satisfied and refuse to look at the developments all round. Every college has to find out where it stands in a larger context. This can be accomplished only by going through the process of assessment and accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The NAAC graded the college with B++ grading. The management took the momentous decision and set the ball rolling.

Eleven years had elapsed before the school metamorphosed into HINDU COLLEGE in 1878. The college had the honour of having as its first Principal Prof. P. Sundaram Pillai, a man of letters, whose Manonmaniam is regarded as a seminal work in the genre of ‘Poetic – Drama’ in Tamil and whose name has lent itself to the university serving the southern most part of India (Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli) whose 150 year of birth was recently celebrated by the University. This distinguished savant was followed by a number of eminent men as principals. Prof. K. Sundararaman, former principal of the college, it would be worth mentioning here that this former principal participated as a delegate in the inaugural session of the Indian National Congress in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1885.
