The Moegling Institute for German Language, one of the 17 institutions managed by the Karnataka Christian Educational Society (KACES), was established in 1979 in Balmatta, Mangalore under the leadership of the then Secretary of the KACES Dr. C. D. Jathanna. The institution is named after Dr.F.Hermann Moegling, one of the pioneer German missionaries, who founded in 1847 what is now the Karnataka Theological College. It was he who published “Mangaluru Samachara”, the first newspaper in Kannada in 1843.

Two basic level German language courses were first offered in collaboration with the Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai. They were later affiliated to Mangalore University, the Certificate course in 1983 and the Junior Diploma course in 1986. The institute is permanently affiliated to Mangalore University since 1997. The Junior Diploma course was discontinued in 2007 for want of candidates.
