Bankura Christian College is not just the name of an academic institution; it is the name of a culture. Very few institutions which may boast of shaping the life of Bengal, Bankura Christian College is one of them. Established by the Weselyan Missionary Society in 1903 it is one of the oldest degree colleges in the Eastern Part of the Country. Although there was the missionary zeal behind the establishment of the institution, its main objective was to open up new horizons in higher education. We may safely assert that the institution had definitely attained its principal objective and hence we feel justifiably proud of this college.

The College started its journey with the affiliation from Calcutta University under the able stewardship of its founder principal Rev. J. Mitchell. Principal Mitchell was succeeded by Rev. A. E. Brown and did his best to uplift the status of the college. The first Indian principal of this college was Mr. A. K. Mundle who joined the institution in the year 1949. Since its inception the College has been playing the role of a pioneer in almost every sphere of life-be it the freedom struggle of pre-independent India, women education, cultural activities, games and sports, or various other fields of social service. The Bankura Christian College is the first to initiate co-education in Bengal and the first women graduate passed out from this College in 1910 making it unique in its role in the education of women. Till this day, in its span of 100 years of existence, the institution has witnessed a number of epoch making events like the two global wars, the fatal partition of the country followed by the Independence. The institution never remained a passive onlooker to these happening and yet was able to retain its pristine character.
