Theological studies and formation as exclusive requirements for priestly training came to a stop with the Vatican II. The people of God as a whole should be theologically enlightened, and participate in articulating their faith experience became a matter of urgency. Theological centres were opened for laity and religious all over the world. The congregations of religious sisters and brothers, individually or collectively, set up their own institutes to respond to the changed reality. Vidya Deep College, Bangalore established in 1964 was one such initiative. It did a marvellous job of providing substantial formation theological input and insights to the Brothers in India. It was the first Institute in India to become a graduate college of Theology, though named as Institute of Religious Sciences under the existing system in the Church, CBCI.
