The city of Lucknow has a glorious past. Legends relate its founder to be Lakshman, brother of Raja Ram Chandra of Ayodhya and it was named Lakhanpur or Laxshmanpur. It is located on the banks of river Gomti. The town's most import ant landmark was a hillock called Lakshman tila upon which was a shrine associated with the worship of Sheshnaaga. We have another opinion regarding the historical past of the city of Nawabs according to which, after the Muslim conquest of India it was occupied by Shiekhs and Pathans who built a fort near Medical College. The architect of the fort was LIKHNA – hence the name Lucknow.

In 1772, Saadat Ali Khan Burhan-ul-Mulk became the first Nawab of Oudh. Under the Shia Nawab's, Lucknow developed a unique culture and became famous for its TAMEEZ (Behavior) TEHZEEB (Culture) and TAMMADDUN (Civilization) .On 13th February 1856 ,the British annexed Oudh on the pretext of Mal administration and deported Nawab Wajid Ali Shah to Calcutta. Lucknow participated actively in the war of independence of 1857. The Residency is a witness of this great struggle. The Hindus and Muslims jointly participated in the Indian National movement and revolutionary activities. The famous Kakori Train Dacoity was planned here. Then it was time for India to achieve its independence and Lucknow boasts of no communal disturbance when the whole of India witnessed communal riots.
