The Vesaja Patel College, Hemgir (Duduka) Sundargarh took its birth in 1982 and has been named after the great philanthropist  Sri Vesaja Patel of village Kundukela.

The college is situated on the bank of river ‘Basundhara’, a place of scenic beauty, surrounded with hills, mountains, dense forest and thirty five kilometers from the district headquarters.

The college has an intake capacity of 1216 numbers of students (affiliated strength). Most of the students belong to the tribal community and they come from the nearby villages. The Hemgir block is dominated by tribal and minorities. The financial background and back bone of the students is not at all sound. So they prefer and opt for taking admission in the college and thereby the strength of the institution is sizable. The college has a salubrious climatic condition and since the college is situated far away from the din and bustle of the town life, it provides a congenial atmosphere for perfect learning.

 The college stands on its own litigation free registered land of 9.69 acres. The structure is a two storied one. Eight big halls are there for general classes and examination purpose. There is another commodious multipurpose hall to conduct and manage cultural programmes as and when required.

 Near about fifty percent of the students are girls. The college within its limited available resources has erected two hostels for them and as much as 150 girls are being accommodated. Besides, another hostel is also available for eighty boys. Four staff quarters also exist within the premises of the college.

The college has its own water source in the form of a deep bore well with submersible pumping system and over head water storage available round the clock.

 The communication facility to reach the college is also good. Through the college is in a tribal belt and remote hilly area but it is well accessible on road throughout the year.

The staff position of the college is 63 (38-teaching, 25-non-teaching). The faculty members (teaching) are devoted, dedicated, affable, duty bound and they concentrate on academic excellence. They imbibe the students to be industrious, studious and cultured. The college imparts teaching in subjects like Geology and I.T. which happen to be a rare discipline. Such a subject helps the students to pursue their future profession because the district has plenty of coal reserves and other minerals.
