Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia (1723-1803) the founder of Ramgarhia misl was the most dedicated and daring leader of the Khalsa Panth in the 18th cent. His grandfather Hardas Singh was baptized by the 10th Master, Guru Gobind Singh, and he actively participated in the exploits of Banda Singh Bahadur. At the young age of 25, Jassa Singh defended the fortress of Ram Rauni from the attack of the provincial governor Mir. Mannu. Baba Deep Singh, Sukha Singh and Nawab Kapur Singh, leaders of the Dal Khalsa, were extremely happy with his strategy and bestowed on him the fortress of Ram Rauni. He repaired the fortress and renamed it Ramgarh. Since that day, his name changed from Jassa Singh Icchogilia to Jassa Singh Ramgarhia. He then continued to consolidate and extend the territorial base of his misl. For protection of his vast empire, he built many new forts at strategic points and shifted his headquarter to Sri Hargobindpur near Batala. Due to internal strife between the misl sardars, Jassa Singh was forced into exile in the territory of Malwa from 1782 to 1787 CE.Jassa Singh Ramgarhia retired to the Punjab and recovered his lost territories, and established his headquarters at Batala, which was fortified by him for the defence of his empire. He died in 1803 CE at the age of 80 after serving the Khalsa Panth with devotion and dedication as a true Sikh Warrior Saint.
