To give Agragati an organizational setup it was registered as a non-profit making society on 19.10.1979 and subsequently registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. With an aim to achieve sustainable development through empowerment and capacity building of the poorest of the rural poor, particularly the scheduled caste, the tribes and other downtrodden section of the society. Women and children are the most vulnerable section who suffers most in any violence or in natural calamity specially, in our country where gender bias is deep rooted. Agragati strongly believes that development of the society can not be possible with contribution from outside only - input from within is equally important.
From its modest beginning in the few villages of Amta, West Bengal, Agragati has extended its project areas to Orissa and Jharkhand. Presently our areas of operation cover 252 villages, 80 Gram Panchayets(GPs), spreading over above 3 states.
Agragati also believes that education is required for transformation, to be able to think by one-self, to be able to relate to others meaningfully and to understand the world and society clearly. Without education one cannot discern what is good or bad? What is right or wrong? What is true or false? What is lovely or ugly? The purpose of education is, therefore, to make human beings capable, competent and wise to meet the challenges of life.
In the summer of 2010, Agragati resolved to establish a B.Ed. college in the name of Late Ramkrishna Mandal, who was the guiding force/spirit behind all the activities of Agragati.
