Actually this is the story of my Design Career ... the way I have experienced it ... and maybe you too face it
During my Design School education, I learnt quite a few interesting things. My faculty was a wonderful instructor and she helped me understand all the basics of Design that she could (the only catch was the shortage of time and the syllabus modules to be followed!!!) So, by the time I got ready to actually start working after completing the programme, I thought I would be able to sustain myself easily. Little did I know that what I had learnt within the classroom was half the story ... There was so much more to it than just drafting sheets !!! The products, their variety, their varied applications, their pros and cons, handling labour, handling clients, handling the business aspects of my profession and how to make it grow, how to talk to my prospects, and most important how to charge ?????
I WAS CLUELESS !!!
And desperate for survival as I had to support my independent nuclear family including my wife and two kids!!! I had left my previous job to enter this profession and here I was facing this unexpected set of situations !!!
When I started my Design career, the usual questions were what is your experience, have you done projects earlier, show us your work and so on ... people who knew nothing about design industry were to judge my professional expertise and knowledge ... and yet I had to find my way through them, gain their support, gain their valuable business and grow in the industry. I did not have any godfather or any special contacts to support my professional growth ... and no senior would let me know their business secrets !!! And that I think is quite OK for them because they too learnt things THE HARD WAY ...
