University of Kashmir (UoK) is a State University which was established as an institute of higher education for conducting examinations in 1948. Later in 1956, the authorities established 3 postgraduate departments in order to revive the old tradition of learning and teaching. These departments were English at Srinagar, and Economics and Geology at Jammu. Thus came into existence a full-fledged University, then christened the University of Jammu and Kashmir. The University was shifted to the present campus, known as Amar Singh Bagh, when the land was donated by Dr. Karan Singh, the second Chancellor of the University.
