Yogi Vemana University (YVU) is an Affiliating and a State University, established by the Act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly. Prior to becoming a University, it existed as Sri Venkateswara University Post Graduate (PG) Centre, as a constituent institute of Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, established on 20th November 1977. It was upgraded as Yogi Vemana University on 9th March, 2006 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. The university was accorded 2 (f) recognition in 2007 and 12 (B) statuses in 2011 by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi. It has been established to impart value-based education, promote quality research and service thereby helping the students and researchers of the backward Rayalseema region in general and Y.S. R district in particular. YVU is named after Vemana, who was a renowned Telugu poet, philosopher, sage, social reformer, thinker and a yogi.
