Jai Prakash Vishwavidyalaya (University) Chapra is one of the premier and largest universities of Bihar. It was established on 22.11.90 by the enactment of Section 3(b) of Bihar State Universities Act, 1976 with its Head Quarters at Chapra. It was carved out from the then, Bihar University (now B.R.A. Bihar University) Muzaffarpur. It was established by the Government of Bihar in response to the growing needs and long standing expectations of the people of Saran commissionary. It was formally inaugurated in November 1992 by Chief Minister Sri Lalu Prasad. The university Is named in memory of the great freedom fighter Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan. The territorial jurisdiction of the University is stretched over the whole of Saran Division Comprising three districts of Chapra, Siwan and Gopalganj. The Colleges situated in these districts were automatically transferred to Jai Prakash University, Chapra.
