Bilaspur University is State University which has been established by the Gazette notification on 03.02.2012 of Chhattisgarh Act No 07, 2012, the Chhattisgarh Viswavidyalaya (Amendment) Act, 2011. Bilaspur Viswavidyalaya came in to its existence in June, 2012. The jurisdiction of Bilaspur University extends to 5 districts namely, the revenue districts of Bilaspur, Mungeli , Korba, Janjgir Champa and Raigarh. It is the second largest University in Chhattisgarh with 162 affiliated colleges to it as of 2015. These affiliated government and private colleges are located in the 5 districts of Chhattisgarh State which together constitute the jurisdiction of Bilaspur University. The colleges carry out undergraduate and postgraduate studies in different streams of Science, Arts, Commerce, Law and Education and Centres of research.
