In the erstwhile Hyderabad State, Karimnagar had the distinction of starting the first Higher Secondary School in the year 1944-45. With a gap of eleven years the district had the distinction of starting the First Degree College in this region in the year 1956. After passing of time i.e., two and a half decades the Satavahana Institute of Post Graduate Studies was started with M.A. Economics and M.Com in 1980. In the academic year 1989-90, the Institute became the PG Centre of Osmania University, Hyderabad and subsequently in the year 1993 it was transferred to the administrative control of Kakatiya University, Warangal. In the month of August, 2008 the PG Centre of Kakatiya University at Karimnagar has been upgraded as Satavahana University.
